Dressing up for Zimbabwe
Westmeads children dressed up in the colours of the Zimbabwean Flag. Max's mum, Camilla John is asking local schools to support the building of a 'pop up' classroom in Harare. Thank you for all of your donations. Together we helped to raise over £200 for this worthwhile charity. Last year we ran a bring and buy sale to raise money for children born with club foot. It was wonderful to see the picture of the little girl whose operation we paid for!
Year 2 Circus Skills workshop.
Every year the Friends of Westmeads pay for a 'Leavers' Treat' for Year 2 children. Last year a morning of circus skills and magic was great fun for all of the children. You can see what a wonderful time they had from the pictures below. Thank you to our generous 'Friends of Westmeads.'
The excellent Rainbow Theatre were in school last visiting Year 1 & 2 children for a workshop all about Victorian children. They learnt all about schools, factories, chimney sweeps and the mines in the Victorian days. The children and staff dressed as Victorians for the day and they loved learning all about how to live in the olden days.
Science week started off with a special assembly and each year group had a day allocated for parents/carers to join in the learning with their children. The children had a fabulous week, experimenting and learning all about science.
Year 1 children swim with Olympian Chris Cook
The Year 1 children had a fabulous morning at the local pool with Chris Cook. He taught them new swimming techniques and shared his wealth of knowledge on the day. The children had a brilliant time swimming, laughing and learning with him. Thank you Chris!

Westmeads School Games 2015
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this years school games a huge success! The children paraded around the playground with our school values in the form of a banner. Then they enjoyed a morning filled with races, activities and a speed stacking relay. Fun was had by all and even the parents and carers got involved!
Times Table Bee
Well done to Lily, Seamus, Sage, Isla, Emily, Arthur, Hal and Caleb for participating in the Times Table Bee. They were really put in the spotlight and asked quick fire questions to test their times table skills. All of the children represented the school fantastically. Congratulations.
New Kurling Equipment
The school recently purchased some new Kurling equipment and the children had a chance to give it a try. All of them enjoyed it and can't wait to use the new equipment again soon.
Adventures Activity Day at Herne Bay High
The children had a fantastic day recently at the Adventures Activity Day at HBH. They conquered the climbing wall among other very adventurous activities!
KS1 Football tournament at CCW
Recently some of our Year 2 children were selected to represent Westmeasd at the KS1 Football tournament. They had a brilliant time on the day showing off their wonderful football skills!
Horsebridge Art Exhibition
Westmeads staff were busy earlier this week displaying all of the children's Art work that was created during Art week. On Monday 8th June you are invited to a private viewing of the art between 5.30-7.00pm at the Horsebridge Community Centre in town. Look forward to seeing you there!

Children and parents have been busy this week painting, drawing and making wonderful creations that will be on display at the Horsebridge Centre during June. Parents/Carers are invited to a private view on Monday 8th June from 5.30-7.00pm.
Thank you to everyone who donated a coin for our Nepalese appeal. We easily managed to spell out the word 'Nepal'. All money raised from this and from the FOW cake sale at the end of this term, which was over £100, will be sent to the UNICEF charity raising money for those affected by the recent earthquakes.
May Day Celebrations
The children enjoyed a performance from the Morris Men to celebrate May Day last week. They had a wonderful time watching the teachers and staff learn to dance moves!
Speed Stacking Competition
Eight of our Yr2 children travelled to Herne Bay High School to take part in the competition. All of the children had to compete in a 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and doubles cycle stack. There werer eleven teams taking part in the competition, from eight difference schools. Red class team and Green class team finished 4th and 5th respectively.
All of the children were confident and competed amazingly well, despite the pressure of being timed!
St George's Day
The whole school celebrated England's patron saint by dressing up in the colours of England!
Easter Egg-travaganza Cake Sale
A big thank you to all who baked, decorated and donated your wonderful cakes to school for the FOW Easter cake sale. The winning cakes were awarded to the creative 'marshmallow sheep' creation!
All 10 Yr2 children who have been attending the Dance Club afterschool performed an African themed dance, to fit in with the 'Around the World' festival in front of a large audience. Despite their initial nerves, all of the children were amazing, earning themselves 2 rounds of applause! Well done!
East Kent Infant Agility Competition
Children had to show their abilities in a variety of skills such as throwing, aiming target, speed bounce, long jump and relay. The teams of 10 from each of Red and Green class were very competitive across the whole event and came in a respectable 7th position out of 19 teams. Well done!
Book Week - Visit from author Chris Wormell
The children had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day! Book week began with a fabulous visit from the children's author Chris Wormell who inspired the children with his stories and illustrations. We hope you enjoyed meeting him at the book signing at the Book Fair. The children went on to create their own books using the wonderful illustration he made with each class.
Easter Window Display in Whitstable
Westmeads children were chosen to decorate the window at a local business in town, 'Jelly Beanz, hairdresser. They were very artistic and created a beautiful Easter-themed display. Well done everyone!
School Council Parliament
Our School Council had a lovely time at the Community College Whitstable during the morning of 'Understanding and Respecting Others'. They learnt all about other faiths and cultures; a highlight of the morning was the food tasting!
Night Owls visit Westmeads!
All the children were visited by a selection of spectacular owls last week. They even had an opportunity to see them fly overhead during the special presentation in the school hall. Afterwards all the children had their photograph taken with the beautiful barn owl, they will soon be available for purchase. More information about the photographs will follow.
The children enjoyed their up close and personal encounter with these elusive animals!
Valentine's day cake sale
Thank you to everyone who supported the FOW cake sale Thursday 12th February.
Together you helped to raise over £120!! It was hard to choose the winner for best decorated cakes, but in the end the prize went to Betty from yellow class! She was awarded with a beautiful print made by Westmeads Mum and local artist Sam Bailey. Thank you Sam for your generous donation!

Light Up Whitstable - Community Lantern Parade
Westmeads children participated along with the other local infant and primary school on Friday 28th November in the Light Up Whitstable lantern parade. They were busy earlier in the week constructing and decorating their lanterns at school in preparation for the parade, which was organised by the Whitstable Chamber of Commerce.

Children in Need
Our School Council voted for us all to dress up as 'superheroes' to help raise money for Children in Need. Thank you to all the children for wearing such amazing costumes and helping to raise almost £200 pounds for such a wonderful cause! Even our Westmeads staff channelled their inner superheroes today!!
Spooky Bake Sale & Save the Bears
Thank you to all the parents/carers and children of Westmeads for donating such wonderful and delicious cakes to the Spooky Bake Sale. And thank you to everyone who purchased cakes too!
There was an amazing £170 raised today!
Well done to Emily and everyone else who contributed to help raise money to Save the Bears! It is wonderful to see the children raising money for causes that they feel so passionate about!

Thank you for all your generous donations for our local harvest project! As last year, we supported the Canterbury Food Bank. This is a community project which provides emergency food parcels to individuals and families in short-term financial crisis across the Canterbury and Whitstable District.
The children have all been happily tucking in to their free school dinners!!
Happy Hearts Event
On Monday 15th October some of our Year 2 children represented Westmeads at the 'Happy Hearts' activity morning to promote healthy active lifestyles. The event was led by Lizzy Yarnold (Gold medal winning Skeleton Olympic Champion) and took place at Herne Bay High School. The children had a brilliant time meeting an Olympian!
National Poetry Day
Thursday 2nd October was National Poetry Day and we celebrated with a special 'poetry themed' assembly. All of the children wrote and shared some of their favourite poems with each other. The teachers also planned special poetry work during the week. Year 2 children posted some cards into special boxes located in the town centre so that their thoughts and ideas about living in Whitstable may be captured in a community poem led by the Horsebridge Centre.
Recently seven of our Year 2 children competed in a football tournament. They did a brilliant job and represented Westmeads wonderfully! They showed off all their skills and made some great saves as well as scoring lots of goals. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the day.
Times Table Bee
A brilliant result was achieved by the six children who recently competed in the Times Table Bee at CCW School. Despite it being very nerve wracking for the children, who were also the youngest at the competition, they were able to win the Team Champion award! Good job everyone! Also a very well done to Alex from Green class who won the Individual Champion award! Thank you for representing Westmeads fantastically.
We had lots of fun during Science Week. The children engaged in some exciting 'hands-on' science activities. From snot making to static electricity, Westmeads had it all! Take a look at the photos to see what we got up to.
As part of Science Week 10 Year 2 children had the opportunity to visit Community College Whitstable for a collaborative Science event with other infant, junior and primary schools from the area.
The children took part in chromatography - learning how to separate the dyes in smarties; pressure - seeing the effect of cold water on a heated can, and cells - The children made their own microscope slide to see the cells of an onion.
World Book Day Celebrations
Well done to everyone for dressing up in such creative and fun costumes to celebrate World Book Day! Throughout the day the children enjoyed stories read to them by parents/carers and volunteers. They also participated in a parade during the school assembly, giving each class an opportunity to see all the amazing costumes the children were wearing.
School Council - Bring and Buy Sale Success!
The Bring and Buy Sale was a great success due to all the generous contributions from both children and parents. The sale was held to raise money for the charity Zane (Zimbabwae A National Diaster), and also to raise money for new play equipment for the outside areas.
The school council will be writing to parents/carers soon about how much money was raised.

The week before half term a few of our Westmeads children participated in a Gymnastics Competition at Herne Bay High. They all performed outstandingly and did Westmeads proud!The spent the afternoon performing routines on the vault, floor and body management.
At the beginning of February we held an 'Art Week' here at Westmeads, which was inspired by our theme of Ancient Civilisations.
Parents and carers were invited into school to work alongside pupils and staff on a range of art activities inspired by Aztec, Egyptian and Native American Indian culture.
The children really enjoyed the event and it seems the adults did, too! We had some very positive responses from those that took part.

Congratulations to Liadain who was a finalist in the Family Category at the Kent School Cooks competition.
She cooked some delicious fish finger sandwiches with homemade tartar sauce and chocolate party krispie cakes.
