Music

At Westmeads our music lesson are taught by a specialist music teacher, Mrs Diamond. Mrs Diamond helps us to sing and play musical instruments with increasing confidence and control. Her lessons are fun and engaging, and are always linked with the Class topic.

Music is taught by our specialist teacher in different year groups in alternative terms; Year 1: Terms 1 & 2; Reception: Terms 3 & 4; Year 2 are taught recorders from Terms 1 to 4 and also have specialist music teaching in Terms 5 & 6.

We also enjoy learning new songs each week with Mrs Lambirth during our singing lessons, and we particularly enjoy performing to parents, carers and visitors in assemblies and at special events throughout the year.

As part of our music curriculum we offer several clubs to encourage the children's love of music.

  • Key stage 1 choir led by Mr Wraight
  • Ukulele lessons led by Mrs Diamond
  • Year 2 Recorder lessons led by Mrs Diamond
  • Violin lessons led by the Kent Music School

There are also many opportunities within school life where the children listen and appraise music within lessons, and learning is brought to life with fun songs and the use of musical instruments in other subject areas.

Visitor Assembly

Our visitor in assembly this week was Alex Hillman, dad to Stirling in Red class. Alex is an artist musician who plays classical guitar and he brought his beautiful instrument to show and play to us. Although it was an electric guitar, he made it himself from wood and asked an artist friend to decorate it (see below).

Alex had his first guitar when he was 6 years old, but started playing properly from the age of 12, and practised and practised for many hours each day. He played us a lovely piece of music ‘The Girl with the Flaxen Hair’ by Claude Debussy. Alex has written music for the guitar, but now prefers to make his living playing classical music. The children loved listening to him play and asked some interesting questions.
