Term 6

Year 2 Leavers

We hope that the children enjoyed their Year 2 leavers’ events this week, including receiving their certificate and medal at the leavers assembly and the circus and magic show on Thursday. It was emotional as always for the children and staff alike. Please see below some of the circus fun that the children had.

School Guinea Pigs

Our wonderful school guinea pigs have grown quite a bit and have settled in well to the school environment.  They are now less shy and are quite happy to be handled and stroked. They are a positive addition to our school for both children and staff alike.

We need your help to continue to provide for their daily needs. Please click here to see our fundraising campaign for Biscuit and Cookie and please share with your friends and family.

Artist in Residence Project

Purple Class have been having a fun time with our Artist in Residence (Becky), creating some wonderful art for the project.

Westmeads Summer Fair

The Summer Fair was organised by the wonderful Friends team. We would particularly like to thank the efforts of Yvonne Needham and Laura Jordan for managing to put on the fair despite current restrictions and the volunteers that helped on the days.

The Friends have raised the fantastic amount of £770.00, which will go towards funding our Artist In-Residence. The children had lots of fun visiting different stalls and playing games and there was an incredible amount of chocolate around!

Year 1 visit to St Peter's Church

The Year 1 children enjoyed their visit to St. Peter’s Church on Wednesday (23/07/21) and learnt about the different parts of a church.

Year R visit to Whitstable Lifeboat Station

Reception went to visit Whitstable Lifeboat Station on Tuesday (22/07/21). Despite the weather, they enjoyed learning about what the lifeboat crew wear, looked at the lifeboat and tractor and met some of the volunteers there. The volunteers were so impressed at how well the children listened and have invited everyone to come back and visit again with their families.

Aeroplane Day

This week Aeroplane Day was enjoyed by all year groups. The children experienced what it is like to go on holiday through an airport.  They went through security, had their bags checked and some even had to take shoes off for security checks. They then went through to the 'aeroplane' (aka the hall!), and took off on their travels with the flight attendants giving out refreshments from the trolley!

Sports Day 2021

This year's Sports Day has been a bit different and unfortunately we were unable to invite parents/carers into the school to watch.  The children took part in lots of different activities followed by a special pick lunch in the Outdoor Classroom.  See below some of the photos that were taken.  We will try to update with more classes as they become available.

Term 5

Hat Day for Book Week

The children looked fantastic in their array of hats depicting their favourite book or character and it was a hard choice, but the winner of the best hat was Valerie in Orange class with her lovely tiger hat. Well done to everyone who took the time and effort to take part, you all looked great!

Please see below some of the fantastic hats worn by our children.

Guinea Pigs

We would like to introduce you to our lovely new school guinea pigs, who have taken up residency at Westmeads in the school library.

Welcome to our new additions, Biscuit and Cookie

UK Mental Health Awareness Week

It is UK Mental Health Awareness Week (May 10th-17th) and all the children have created a flower, which has been displayed along our school railings. A big thank you to Miss Elms for attaching them all!

This week we will be reminding the children about looking after their mental health and practising some of the techniques we have been shown by Mrs Quinn. We hope you like our wonderful, colourful display.

Panto time!

We have started the term with a treat for the children in the form of a Pantomime.  M & M Productions put on a fantastic (covid safe) performance of 'The Wizard of Oz', which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Please check out some photos below.

Usually this is paid for by the wonderful Friends of Westmeads, but as we have not used much of the money donated by you from school funds this year, and all children have benefitted from the event, we have gone halves with Friends and used some of the school funds to pay for this treat.

Term 4

Science Week

It has been Science Week in school and the children have been taking part in some exciting activities, including Years 1 and 2 pupils watching the Zoolab Science workshop via zoom, which was a huge hit! We had an amazing response from the children taking part in science activities, especially when experimenting with a coke bottle and a mint sweet! Some photos are below of what we got up to.

Thank you to all those families who sent in photos for our Science competition, which we were running as part of Science Week. We have had an amazing response. Miss Wright collated a selection of the photos, which were sent out to families to try to decipher what the extreme close up images were. We are delighted to announce that Ewan in Red class was the winner, as he got the most correct (specific) answers and has won a children’s science kit. Congratulations Ewan!

Red Nose Day 2021

It was great to see everyone coming into school on Friday, 19th March with inside out or around the wrong way clothes on and contributing a donation to Comic Relief.

The children enjoyed some fun activities in class. We also appreciated the delicious 'Red Nose' biscuits mad by Mrs Ball and her team.  The staff dance off was, as you can imagine, hilarious for the children and embarrassing for the staff who took part.  The proud winner  of the dance off was Mrs McGrath for her original take on the Macarena! Watch the video below to see a selection of what we got up to.

Thank you as always for your wonderful support in raising ££645.00 for Comic Relief.  This amount includes £215.00 that was raised from Sport Relief last year that due to the pandemic wasn’t able to be banked last year. A big thank you to all those who were able to donate. You are all fantastic!

Christmas Events

We have had some lovely festive fun at school over the last few weeks (December 2020) despite the extenuating circumstances. Please see below photos of some of the events that have taken place, including: Christmas activity day, Christmas dinner and Christmas Class parties.

A big thank you to the Friends of Westmeads and the Parents/Carers who volunteered to make all our events a big success.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Westmeads! The children have been decorating the tree in the school hall with decorations they have made in class.

Thank you to all those who took part in the half term tree challenge. Here is a video of your amazing artwork from you.

Term 1

Harvest Assembly - 14th October 2020

We had a whole school Harvest themed virtual assembly via Zoom where the children sang and read out what they had learned about cereals and the harvest.

National Poetry Day virtual assembly

See our pupils sharing their poems with the rest of the classes to mark National Poetry Day.

Fantastic Fred Experience

On the 30th October 'Fantastic Fred' visited Westmeads.  This exciting resource was launched by the NHS in Kent in March 2019 to help raise awareness of mental health among children and equip them at a very early age to improve their lifelong emotional resilience.

The children had great fun watching the performance and learning about ways they could improve their mental health through the letters of Fred's name:

Food - Eating the right foods

Rest - Getting enough rest/sleep

Exercise - Being active

Devices - Managing time on digital devices.

CURIOSITY - INDEPENDENCE - PERSEVERANCE - LOVE AND KINDNESS - RESPECT - EQUITY
