Rumble in the Jungle

This term we will be reading the book, 'Rumble in the Jungle' by Giles Andreae.

We will be looking at poetry, rhyming words and having a go at writing our own!

St George's Day

Jungle Fever!

Yellow class have been very excited about exploring the jungle this term!  They have been making lists of animals that can be found in a jungle and drawing, painting and pretending to be them!    Some children recreated their own jungle scenes with the construction equipment.

Using the book 'Walking through the jungle' and listening to jungle music we have been moving around the hall pretending to be lots of different types of animals.  This included sliding, climbing, swinging, running, creeping, leaping and pouncing.

The children decided that they wanted to change the role play area into a jungle vets.  The vets have been particularly busy the last few days with lots of poorly animals arriving to be treated!

'Rumble in the Jungle' Drama Workshop

All the children enjoyed the Drama Workshop on Friday 27th April. They had to go on a secret jungle mission to find the key so that they could rescue Blaze the golden cat from the scary crocodile!  During their adventure in the jungle they even learnt to speak banana language!

Counting

The children have been practicing their counting skills to count large groups of objects and counting out a set number of objects, using numbers up to 20.  When the objects could be moved the children lined them up before counting them.  If they were objects on paper the children found it useful to cross them out as they counted so they didn't count any twice!

Dead Horse Morris Men

The Morris men visited school and performed a few dances for us in the hall in preparation for the May Day celebration.  There was even a giant tree called 'Jack-in-the-Green'!  The children enjoyed tapping and clapping along to the music.

Trapped! Science Experiment

This week the children have been investigating how to free the dinosaurs that had became trapped in the ice!  First they found out about what ice was and had to predict how they could free the dinosaurs.  The next day the children had an opportunity to test out their ideas through different experiments using all their senses.  These included trying to cut the ice, leaving the ice in the sun, trying to melt the ice with their hands, leaving the ice by the radiator in the classroom, putting the ice in warm water and dropping the ice on the floor.

The children thoroughly enjoyed investigating the ice and the experiments continued for the rest of the week!  Thankfully all the dinosaurs were freed in the end.  Hooray!!

Snowy Fun

The snow arrived for a few days and was a very welcome surprise for everyone!  The children and adults enjoyed playing outside, making mini snowmen, using the mud kitchen utensils to make snow pancakes and cupcakes, leaving footprints in the snow and just having fun.

Book Week

The author Sally Grindley came to Westmeads School and visited Yellow and Orange class to read  'Shhhh!' and 'It's a Troll!' which she wrote.   Everyone enjoyed listening to her share her stories and find out what it's like to be an author.

Parent Story Share Afternoon

During Book Week, some parents came to visit Yellow class to share their favourite stories to the children.  The children loved listening to all the different stories.  Thank you to the mums who came in!

Term 3

Buildings

This term we will be thinking about lots of different types of buildings. The children will have the opportunity to create different 2D and 3D buildings and we look forward to parents/carers coming in to help us later in the term!

Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime

Our Beanstalk Challenge!

The children were inspired after the 'Jack and the Beanstalk' pantomime to create their own beanstalks.  This lead into a competition between the two classes to create the longest beanstalk.  The children worked together to wrap masking tape around twisted sheets of newspaper.  The experimented with different techniques to try and make the longest stripe they could!  In the end Yellow class made the longest beanstalk.  Although Orange class' beanstalk was shorter, it was thicker so the children thought it would be much stronger!

Castles

The children have enjoyed going crazy about castles!  They have used information books to find out about the names for different parts of a castle and design and creating their own buildings using a variety of materials.

The Three Little Pigs

We have been reading the story of 'The Three Little Pigs' and also other versions of the story.  The favourite story in Yellow class was 'The Three Little Superpigs!'

After reading the stories, the children enjoyed acting out the story using the masks and dressing up costumes in the role play area.

Some children were inspired to use different materials to design and make their own houses for the little pigs.

Patterns, Colours and Shapes

The children walked around the school building looking for different patterns, colours and shapes on the doors, walls and windows.  Then they drew a close observational drawing of what they could see in their sketchbooks.

Exploring Buildings in Whitstable

The children braved the weather and had a short walk around Whitstable to look at the buildings in the local area.  They noticed similarities and differences between the buildings; the materials that they were made of, different shapes, sizes and colours of the windows, doors and roofs and different types of buildings such as shops, houses, a school and a church.  There were lots of different patterns to see; one boy noticed bricks laying on their side which he thought looked like a domino rally!

The children wrote about some of the things that they saw on the walk using their photos.

Westmeads Model Town

It was great to see all buildings the children had made put together as a little model town in the hall.   The children did a fantastic job and were very proud of their hard work!

Little Red Riding Hood

The children loved this variation of the story and had lots of fun role playing, making puppets of the characters and writing speech bubbles as the lion.

Nativity Performance

Christmas

The children have been enjoying a variety of Christmas activities at school.   They had the opportunity to take part in lots of lovely Christmas activities including decorating a jar for a candle, creating a Christmas card and tree decoration, mixing reindeer food and having a go at the snowball throwing game.

Later on, Father Christmas arrived at the Yellow door and, after telling all the children about all the important jobs he has to do before Christmas Eve, gave out a special early Christmas present to everyone.

Some of the children in Yellow and Orange class made a sleigh out of the giant wooden bricks.   A few children dressed up as the reindeer ready to 'pull' the sleigh and the others all pretended to  be Father Christmas or Mrs Christmas.  Once the sleigh was loaded up, all the children set off on their journey, singing 'Jingle Bells' whilst playing different instruments.

The children had fun and enjoyed their first Christmas dinner with the rest of the school in the hall.
